La tour fut construite par les Turcs après la bataille de Cegar contre les Serbes en 1809 avec environ 952 crânes décapités de soldats Serbes. Une autre partie fut envoyée au Sultan d'Istanbul par Khurshid Pasha. Il en reste seulement 58 actuellement dans la tour. L'Europe a eu connaissance de ce monument à partir du voyage d'Alphonse de Lamartine et de son oeuvre "Voyage vers l'Est"
