GLASGOW - Le capitaine de Motherwell Phil O'Donnell est décédé samedi après avoir été hospitalisé à la suite d'un malaise sur le terrain du match de Championnat d'Ecosse contre Dundee United, a annoncé l'agence Press Association, citant le président du club Bill Dickie.

Phil O'Donnell (March 25, 1972 - December 29, 2007), was a Scottish football player.

O'Donnell began his career with Motherwell F.C. and in 1991 at the age of 18 won a Scottish Cup winners medal after scoring for the Motherwell team that beat Dundee United 4-3 in the 1991 Scottish Cup Final.

O'Donnell's blistering form made him a target for bigger clubs and he signed for Celtic F.C. in 1994. The fee of £1.75m is, to this day, the highest fee Motherwell have received for a player.

However injury proved to be a major concern, and in 1999 he signed for Sheffield Wednesday. The move didn't work out. He played just one match in his first season and stayed with the club until he was released in 2003.

O'Donnell appeared to be heading out of the game but former club Motherwell initially offered him training facilities and the Fir Park legend was back playing in the claret and amber in January 2004, appearing alongside his nephew, David Clarkson and was club captain until his death.

He earned one cap for the Scotland national football team against Switzerland during his first spell at Motherwell.

On 29 December 2007, he collapsed with an apparent seizure during a game against Dundee Utd just as he was about to be substituted. On the way to Wishaw General Hospital, he died from a heart attack.[1]
